What is Energy classification?

Energy classification

Energy classification is a system for grading the energy efficiency of a building or product. The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning manages the regulations regarding buildings.

The purpose of energy classification is to provide consumers and property owners with clear information about how much energy is used, making it easier to compare and choose energy-efficient alternatives. The classification is usually based on a scale from A to G, where A is the best (lowest energy use) and G is the worst (highest energy use).

The energy classification is part of the energy declaration for a building. An energy declaration is required for most buildings over 250 square meters that are visited by the public, as well as for buildings that are let with a right of use, such as rental apartments or condominiums. Newly built or newly produced houses that are to be sold must also be declared energy. Exceptions exist for buildings that have low energy needs, such as barns and machine halls.

To get green loans, energy class A or B is often required. Properties with the worst energy classes can in some cases be difficult to obtain a mortgage at all.
